Why is Israel the land to die for?

Just to the west of Mesopotamia and the East of Egypt this wedge shaped sliver of land is arguably the most desired in all the world. For reasons higher than climate, geography or natural resources the Jews, Muslims and Christians have each claimed it to be their own and fought over it for several millennia.
Today, it is the home of the descendants of the first recorded slaves (Hebrews) and even the name "Israel" means "Triumphant with God."
This land is believed to be promised by God and because this belief is true to all three religions, peace has never been reached in the region. From Biblical times to the Crusades and even today the fight rages on for this Holy Land.
